Hello! I am 6.5 wks postpartum with our beautiful little girl. I was told by my Dr that if I was breastfeeding then I couldn't get pregnant. So of course we took that as a green light and started having unprotected sex close to 3 weeks ago. I have now found out that I was misinformed, went and got a pregnancy test this morning and it has a faint but very clear positive line. Please tell me this is leftover HCG from my last pregnancy?!?

@autumnlabree2254,
that doctor needs to give you free medical care. Wtf. And also par for the course in SC. I lived there for a year and had to get out. Unless you’re in Charleston it’s nowhere you want to be. Come to Atlanta. We have better healthcare and cookies.

Yeah. I know it is supposed to work, but I’ve seen it fail too many times to have faith in it. Both my mom and my husband have a sibling that is less than a year apart from them.

@autumnlabree2254,
yep. My uncle was born in October of 55. My mom followed in august of 56. She pretty much got knocked up immediately after giving birth. My grandma breastfed all 5 of her kids.
Then my husband was born in august of 73. His sister was born July of 74. His mom breastfed all 4 of her kids.

My best friend thought the same thing and she now has Irish twins.
However, just because that happened to other people doesn’t mean that’s what’s going on with you either! You just might need to check in with your dr to verify.

Breastfeeding as a form of birth control only sometimes works. You have to follow specific guidelines to even have a chance at it working. I EBF my son and got my period back 8 weeks pp and was pregnant by the next cycle. My babies are 10 months apart. You’re also very fertile after birth. I’m surprised you guys started having sex so quickly after birth! Usually doctors have you wait at the very least 4 weeks. Also, I just had an HCG drawn at the doctors yesterday and it was completely negative. I’m 5w6d postpartum, so I’d say it’s likely not leftover HCG from your pregnancy.

@GG210,
It’s not even the guidelines, it’s mostly dumb luck. I happened to be one of the people who did not ovulate PP due to breastfeeding. I didn’t ovulate again until I fully weaned my daughter. My first period was like 14 months PP, about a couple weeks after I dropped the last feed— but I was actively weaning up until that point and I was down to one nursing session a day for several weeks prior.
On the other hand, my sister breastfed even longer than I did and had her first period like four months PP. ♀️

@McIntyreFamilyof5,
agree, I think it depends on the person’s own hormones. Like you, I didn’t get a period until after fully weaning

I'm so sorry you're Dr. said that. you may not have a period while breastfeeding, but you can still ovulate. I hope everything works out. I know it happens to many many people.

Like the others have said, I am shocked your doctor gave you this advice! It does sound like you are pregnant. I know it’s probably quite the shock and might not be the most ideal situation, but it’s certainly doable! I wish you luck

I doubt the doctor said that but maybe it was possibly misconstrued.. the chances are low but definitely possible.. don’t you know people who’ve had pregnancies back to back? I see it all the time….
